The Professional Development Committee

Purpose, Goals and Objectives

To provide rewarding scholastic and social experiences that promote the Human Resources profession. We manage the scholarship program, the mentorship program, college outreach efforts, and the chapter's certification study program in order to encourage members to become certified and recertified.

To promote awareness of and involvement in the Austin SHRM while encouraging our members to develop their knowledge, skills and abilities in the human resource profession.

To learn more about the value Austin SHRM provides our members, please view Austin SHRM's Member Engagement Circle.

Professional Development features committees for Certification and Mentoring

  • The Mentoring Committee organizes efforts between Senior Human Resource Executives and those in the Human Resource Management profession seeking coaching as they progress their skills and careers.
  • The Certification Committee plans and conducts study groups; advises members seeking test applications, study materials and resources; and coordinates recognition events for Austin SHRM members attaining certification.

Austin SHRM provides a free Mentor / Mentee program to all current members.

The Austin SHRM Mentoring program was launched in March of 2015, and provides a unique opportunity for experienced HR Leaders to develop others, and less experienced HR professionals the opportunity to learn and grow in their HR journey. To date more than a hundred Austin SHRM members have benefited from this program with amazing results!

Benefits of the program:

  • Customizable – this program gives Mentors the opportunity to gain experience in coaching, goal setting, action plans, and more!
  • Casual – our Mentees will learn from experienced HR professionals in a comfortable environment and at their own pace.
  • This is a FREE program for all current Austin SHRM members!

Program Details:

The program is separated into 2 phases per year, Fall and Spring, and each phase lasts 4 months. Topics covered by Mentors/Mentee pairs will motivate, educate, navigate, and transfer experience - all for the purpose of achieving their goals!

Our program is less formal than most mentoring programs; rather than a rigid and defined program, our focus is on knowledge-sharing within a network of individuals who have a wealth of experience in the Human Resources field. This casual approach allows the Mentor and Mentee the ability to customize their own program and work towards goals they themselves have established. Each team is given the freedom to decide how often they would like to meet, where, when, and what their time will be focused on - it could be meeting over lunch or even a phone call!  Each Mentor / Mentee pair is carefully selected by the Mentor Committee to provide the best quality and outcomes.

This program is NOT - a free consultant services, a job search service, or an ongoing dependent relationship.

Program Requirements:

In order to participate in the program, you must:

  • Be a current Austin SHRM member and maintain membership for the duration of the Phase
  • Plan to remain actively involved in a Human Resources capacity for the entire duration of the Phase
  • Commit to at least 4 meetings/calls with your partner
