How Smart People Deal with Difficult People

In these polarizing times, we must rely on intelligence when interacting with difficult others. We'll discuss the science behind avoiding contempt, recognizing motive attribution asymmetry, and learning to coexist gracefully with disagreement (even when we don't feel like it) to limit risk, liability, and toxicity in our workspaces.

Learning objectives:

Understand the foundational support for knowing how to disagree respectfully with those around us.
Learn how to recognize and redirect when our brains engage in contempt for another person.
Practice the learned skill of empathizing with another’s perspective through curated exercises.
Learn to identify and avoid motive attribution asymmetry when we compare our positions to those with whom we disagree.

We have two very special opportunities for you to help give back to the community this month. Austin SHRM is partnering with Caritas of Austin to make an impact on homelessness in Austin.

1. Assemble hygiene kits on site immediately following the breakfast monthly meeting. You may purchase necessary items to be included in these kits through our Amazon wish list.

2. In-person food service. Join us on Wednesday, May 24th from 8:45 am - 1:30 pm to help feed the community. Register here through our website.

Use of Photographic Images

Attendance and participation in Austin SHRM events constitutes an agreement by the attendee to Austin SHRM’s use and distribution (both now and in the future) of the attendee’s image or voice in photographs, videotapes, and/or electronic reproductions. Images and videos may be used on the Austin SHRM website, social media and for other purposes. Attendees waive, release and forever discharge Austin SHRM from and against claims or actions arising out of or resulting from any use of attendee’s image.

Reservation/Cancellation Policy

Registrations must be received before close of business on the Monday prior to the event so that we may turn in a headcount. Onsite registrations are accepted at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. If you can't make the event, please let us know 72 hours beforehand by sending an email to support@austinshrm.org, so that we can cancel your registration. Please note, refunds will not be issued after the 72 hour mark as we pay the venue based on the number of attendees reserved - including no-shows.
