AHRMA presents the Karl B. Zimmerman Memorial Scholarships

Download application information at the bottom of this webpage.

The Karl B. Zimmerman Memorial Scholarships, presented by AHRMA, are named after Karl B. Zimmerman who was an outstanding Austin leader in the human resource and business community.

Karl graduated from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, in 1971 and then moved to Austin in 1977 from Arkansas.  For the next 20 years, he served in various HR roles, such as HR Director of Capital National Bank and Director of HR at the Texas Water Commission.

In 1977, Karl served as president for the Austin Personnel Association, which later became the Austin Human Resource Management Association (AHRMA). During AHRMA’s early years, Karl advocated for the funding of an AHRMA scholarship awards program to recognize students working towards a business degree with emphasis in the human resource curriculum.  In 1992, the Executive Committee voted to fund two $500 scholarships. Since that time, AHRMA has provided thousands of dollars in scholarship funds to those students who have demonstrated academic excellence and interest in selecting a career in the human resource arena.

When Karl died in 1994, the AHRMA Executive Committee voted to name the scholarships the “Karl B. Zimmerman Memorial Scholarships” as a tribute to his dedication to the field of human resource management and his efforts to develop our future HR leaders of tomorrow.

In 1998, the AHRMA Executive Committee voted to increase the scholarship awards to two (2) $2,000 scholarships – the Karl B. Zimmerman Memorial Scholarship for both graduate and undergraduate students. In 2013, the award was changed to $2,000 for full-Time students and $1,000 for part-time students, beginning in 2014.
